Day hike: Naturpfad Weltende - Sonnenberg viewpoint

Start: Naturpfad Weltende near Isert
Destination: Sonnenberg lookout point

Length of hike: approx. 4 km

This section of the WesterwaldSteig is undoubtedly one of the most romantic. However, surefootedness and a head for heights on the steep banks of the Nister are absolutely essential here.

Bus 280 takes you to the turn-off to Isert, so you cross the B256 and then follow the access path markings to the WesterwaldSteig to the right.

The trail descends into the Nister valley, past the Idelberg reed sewage treatment plant to the Nister bridge. Here you join the WesterwaldSteig, which now takes you along the same side of the river via naturpfad Weltende.

The narrow path leads you along the slope, over rocky sections and also past an old gallery exit. At a stream, the path returns in the opposite direction on the slope ridge back up to Sonnenberg. A wonderful resting place awaits you up here with one of the most beautiful vantage points on the WesterwaldSteig. You can look far into the high Westerwald and follow the meandering Nister in the valley of Kroppacher Schweiz.

Day hike: Marienthal Monastery-Raiffeisenturm-Obererbach

Start: Marienthal Monastery
Destination: Obererbach (from here back by train)

Length of hike: 10 km

From Marienthal Monastery, follow the WesterwaldSteig trail and continue along the Kreuzweg (Way of the Cross) through the extensive woodland. After just under 2 km, you will reach the edge of the forest and look down on the village of Hilgenroth on your right. On your left is Obererbach, from where you can return later. Via meadow paths, you will pass forest fringes and enter the next section of forest, which will soon give you a view of the Raiffeisen Tower. From here you have a magnificent view over the Bergisches Land, the Siebengebirge and the Altenkirchener Land far into the Westerwald.

On weekdays, bus line 285 takes you back to the Au or Altenkirchen railway stations. On Saturdays, you can walk to the nearest railway station in Obererbach.

If you don't want to walk back along the WesterwaldSteig, you can follow the "Turmweg" (tower path) before the Beul forest cemetery, which leads you along the edge of the forest towards Busenhausen. You will soon meet the Obererbach circular trail (OE) and follow it for approx. 2 km to Obererbach station.

Here you can take the hourly return train to Siegen.

Day hike: Mehren - Flammersfeld

Start: Mehren
Destination: Flammersfeld

Length of the hike: approx. 8 km

You arrive by train in Altenkirchen and take bus line 254 to Mehren.

In Mehren, you walk from the open-air stage up the Mehrbach to a small sheep meadow, which offers another beautiful view of the centre of Mehren with its church. After a few metres on the village road, a forest section begins, which initially leads you along the Mehrbach. At the end of the forest, you will come to a fork in the road, which also has an access path to Kescheid, to the Fey family's milk house.

The WesterwaldSteig leads you to Ahlbach, where you can see very pretty half-timbered houses, the studio of the Summerer family and an old mill (now a residential building). Shortly before Flammersfeld, you will come across a lovingly designed nature trail. Cross the L272 and reach Flammersfeld with its small Raiffeisen Museum, which provides information about the work of Raiffeisen, the founder of the cooperative, who was also mayor of Flammersfeld from 1848. Guided tours of the museum are available by appointment (tel. 02681/85 193).

From Flammersfeld you can take bus 120 back to Altenkirchen. In Altenkirchen you can then take the train home.

Day hike: Sonnenberg viewpoint - Marienthal monastery

Start: Sonnenberg lookout point
Destination: Marienthal Monastery (from there back by train)

Length of hike: approx. 5 km

After crossing the B256, walk straight ahead and keep to the left (access route markings to the WesterwaldSteig). After about 500 m, you will reach the Sonnenberg vantage point, which offers a fascinating view of "Kroppacher Schweiz" and the high Westerwald. Leave the Sonnenberg on the same path and walk along the edge of the forest to the right in front of a sundial towards the main road.

After crossing the main road, the Westerwald trail runs to the right below and leads you after a few metres along the meadow path down into the Seelbach valley. Pass a deer enclosure and head uphill to the village of Racksen. A look back from here is also worthwhile and shows that the term "Kroppacher Schweiz" is justified.

Soon you reach the forest area around Marienthal, where, as in many forest areas in our region, iron ores were already found in the Middle Ages and smelted into usable iron using simple "racing furnaces".

Once you arrive in Marienthal, you have several opportunities to stop for a break or enjoy the more than 500-year-old place of contemplation with its former monastery, which was already visited by many believers in the Middle Ages as a place of miracles and pilgrimage.

If you would like to end your hike here, you have the option of taking the forest path signposted WesterwaldSteig-Zuweg to the "Kloster Marienthal" railway station.

Here there are hourly return services to Au/Sieg or Altenkirchen.
Please note that there is no train stop at Kloster Marienthal station after dark. Please refer to the current timetable on site.

Day hike: Weyerbusch - Mehren

Start: Weyerbusch
Destination: Mehren

Length of the hike: approx. 6.5 km

From the bus stop in Weyerbusch it is only a few metres to the Raiffeisen monument. Behind it is the mayor's office where Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen began his political career as mayor of Weyerbusch in 1845 and, among other things, founded the "Brodverein", the nucleus for the development of Raiffeisen cooperatives.

At the end of the village, you meet the WesterwaldSteig trail, which enters the forest on the left here and slowly leads you into the Mehrbach valley. Behind Forstmehren, the trail climbs again along an old sunken path and soon you reach Mehren with its charming Romanesque basilica, built around 1200.

But the village, whose centre is a listed building, has even more to offer:

- old half-timbered houses from the 16th century

- the more than 400-year-old "Bullesje" village prison

- the open-air theatre in the centre of the village.

From Mehren, take bus line 254 back to Weyerbusch. In Weyerbusch you can then take bus line 250 to Altenkirchen, and from Altenkirchen you have the option of taking the train back to Siegen or Au (Sieg).

Day hike: Obererbach - Raiffeisenturm - Weyerbusch

Start: Obererbach
Destination: Weyerbusch

Length of hike: approx. 16.5 km

The access road to the WesterwaldSteig is signposted from the service stop in Obererbach. Past the village hall and along the edge of the forest, you will reach the WesterwaldSteig after approx. 1.4 km. Here you turn left over meadow paths and through the Busenhausen forest to the Raiffeisen Tower, which with its 35 m height offers a breathtaking view over the Bergisches Land, the Siebengebirge and the Altenkirchener Land far into the Westerwald.

From the tower, the trail continues through the Heupelzer Forest and onto the historic "old coal road". The road, which was once used by timber and coal traders, is still recognisable today by its width of about 10 m and the earth banks at the sides. The road conditions were often very difficult. This can still be experienced today, especially during rainy periods.

As you continue along the road, you will occasionally recognise peculiar valleys in the forest, where the extracted iron ore used to be processed in the forest forge. Today, however, you can enjoy the absolute tranquillity here, which is only interrupted by the babbling of a small idyllic forest stream or the chirping of birds.

After Oberirsen, the landscape changes and you cross fields and meadows in a hilly landscape typical of the region. A little later you will reach Hasselbach, where the artist Erwin Wortelkamp presents works of art by various artists in a 10-hectare area.

In Weyerbusch you should take a look at the Raiffeisen monument with the bakehouse and the mayor's office. After all, it was here that Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, as mayor, founded the "Brodverein" and thus the nucleus of the Raiffeisen cooperatives.

From Weyerbusch you have the option of taking the bus line 250 back to Altenkirchen. From Altenkirchen there is an hourly train connection to Siegen or Au (Sieg).
